What lifespan really means
A lithium battery does not stop working on a fixed date — it gradually loses capacity. Manufacturers quote cycle life to 80 percent capacity, and a good 48V pack with brand cells is rated for 800 to 1,000 full charge cycles.
For a commuter charging three times a week, that is roughly five to six years. For a delivery rider charging daily or twice daily, it is closer to two to three years before range drops noticeably.
What shortens battery life in Kenya
Heat is the main enemy. Charging a hot battery immediately after a long ride, or leaving a pack in direct sun in a parked bike, accelerates ageing more than almost anything else.
Deep discharges are second. Repeatedly running to zero stresses the cells. So does leaving a pack at full charge for weeks during an idle period.
Unbranded chargers are third, and the most dangerous. A mismatched charger can overheat cells and is a genuine fire risk.
Habits that add years
Charge between 20 and 90 percent for daily use and only go to 100 percent before a long ride. Let the pack cool for 20 to 30 minutes after riding before plugging in. Store at around half charge if the bike will sit unused for more than two weeks.
Charge indoors on a stable surface, away from bedding and exits, and always with the charger supplied for that pack.
Replacement cost and recycling
A replacement 48V 15Ah pack typically costs between KES 45,000 and KES 70,000 depending on cell quality and capacity, and a 20Ah pack rather more. Spread over three years of riding, that is a modest running cost next to petrol.
